How to Make a German School Cone

I know and I cannot believe that we are thinking about Back to School again. I am never the one to start these conversations, as you can usually find me at the pool feeding my family sandwiches until 9:00 p.m. the day before The Big Day.

As much as it pains me, I think our kids get excited about school and learning the more we do. I have a strong feeling that our children might need something special to think about going into classrooms again.

Here in Germany, I suppose you know it’s time when the Schultütes, German School Cones, start showing up in the store windows like they are now. To know a German cutie is to get to see their First Grade photo carrying a Schultüte (see below). 🙂

They’re not as common in the States, of course, but I think such a cute way to bundle up basic school supplies in a fun way to get excited about starting school.

There’s adorable reusable Schultütes for order online, but I thought I would show you how I made my own the night before First Grade in our family – crazy to think that was a few years ago that we had a Waldorf homeschool in the house!

German School Cone Supplies

  1. The first thing I did was use a flat edge to cut my posterboard into a triangle shape so I could roll the paper into a cone. I secured it down the back with my stapler.
  2. Then, cutting a scallop edge along the tissue paper, I folded it and glued it to the inside of the cone with a glue stick.
  3. Then I stuffed the cone with all the treats!
  4. Before closing it up with a ribbon and decorating the outside.

I really loved making this for my girl and her special friend.

It’s easy to get smiles on the front porch for the first day of school when you have a German school cone filled with fun!
